Predicting Iron Adequacy

Predicting Iron Adequacy

This project aims to develop a predictive equation for estimating iron absorption that focuses on the effect of dietary factors which can be used to evaluate foods in the absence of host factors.

Project Goals:

  • Building on the Framework To Assess Bioavailability from Foods developed by Weaver et al., our aim is to develop a predictive equation capable of estimating bioavailable iron intake from foods when host level data is unknown.
  • Use the algorithm to apply to country level data, intake level data, or product data.

Leadership Team:

  • Seth Armah, PhD – University of NC Greensboro, USA (Chair)
  • Cornelia Loechl, PhD – International Atomic Energy Agency, Austria
  • Ray Glahn, PhD – USDA-Agricultural Research Services, USA
  • Richard Hurrell, PhD – ETH Zurich, Switzerland
  • Inger-Cecilia Mayer Labba, PhD – Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden
  • Alida Melse-Boonstra, PhD – Wageningen University and Research, Netherlands
  • Diego Moretti, PhD – University of Applied Sciences of Southern Switzerland, ETH Zurich, Switzerland
  • Manju Reddy, PhD – Iowa State University, USA
  • Maria Traka, PhD – Quadram Institute Bioscience, UK
  • Ann-Sofie Sandberg, PhD – Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden
  • Nele Steenacker, PhD – Maastricht University, Netherlands

Deliverables:

  • Publication in peer-reviewed journal detailing the development process of the algorithm and the algorithm itself.
  • Open access iron bioavailability prediction equation/algorithm.
