Recommended Intake Ranges for Lutein and Zeaxanthin

Recommended Intake Ranges for Lutein and Zeaxanthin

Project Background

ILSI U.S. and Canada is supporting the development of an evidence-based recommended intake range for lutein and zeaxanthin. The project aims to provide clearer guidance on intake from foods and dietary supplements to support visual function and improve communication among healthcare professionals, researchers, and consumers.

Project Phases

Phase 1: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
A comprehensive review of the evidence examining lutein and zeaxanthin intake in relation to visual function, including outcomes such as visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, glare sensitivity, dark adaptation, and photostress recovery.

Phase 2: Expert Panel and Intake Recommendation
An independent expert panel will evaluate the systematic review and relevant safety data to develop an evidence-based quantitative intake recommendation for lutein and zeaxanthin.

Expert Panel

The expert panel brings together leaders in nutrition, carotenoid research, and visual health:
